Employment Practices Liability Insurance

What Does EPLI Cover?

As a business owner, you need to protect against as much risk as possible. This includes losses that could arise from an employment related event. Employment Practices Liability insurance provides coverage for claims resulting from several potential acts such as:

  • Sexual harassment

  • Wrongful termination

  • Discrimination

  • Retaliation

  • FMLA violations

  • Wrongful or failure to promote

  • Mismanagement of employee benefit plans

  • Wrongful discipline

You can purchase a stand-alone policy if needed, otherwise our team suggests it be included on your Business Owners Policy (BOP). The cost is based on the number of employees and type of business. Most carriers offer several levels of coverage which includes legal defense fees associated with a claim, that can add up quickly.

Preventing an Employee Practices Liability Claim

The best way to prevent a claim is to create clear policies and procedures. Providing your employees with additional education can also help. Our carriers offer employment-related resources such as a model employee handbook, web-based training, current articles regarding EPLI trends and sample employment forms (letters, applications, warnings). This gives you an additional layer of assistance to safeguard against these kinds of claims.

Depending on your business operation, you can add additional endorsements to better protect your business. This policy will not provide coverage for professional liability/E&O.
